Acoustic tracking technology has been used to find Antarctic blue whales from hundreds of kilometres away.
The technique adapts sonar from anti-submarine combat technology meaning the whales can be detected via the strains of their low-pitched song rather than relying on traditional migration routes and a dose of luck. Once the whales are located, more traditional tracking methods can be used.
