The fate of 450 medical-research chimpanzees owned or supported by the U.S. government will soon be decided. Most will likely be sent to sanctuaries, but 50 may be kept in captivity and used for medical experiments in decades to come.
A decision to keep these chimps for research will be controversial. Profound questions remain over how to balance human benefits against the costs of such research, both to chimpanzees and to our own consciences. Itís debatable whether the experiments can ever be done in a way that treats chimps with the empathy due to humanityís closest living relative.
